Northeastern University breaks ground on residence hall in Boston

New England Council member Northeastern University has broken ground on a 23-story, 1,215-bed residence hall at 840 Columbus Avenue in Boston, one of the largest recent residential developments on the university’s campus. The approximately 445,200-square-foot building, developed in partnership with American Campus Communities and Blackstone Real Estate, replaces a university-owned parking lot and is expected to open in fall 2028.

The project represents a significant investment in both student housing and the surrounding Roxbury community. Northeastern has committed $10 million over 10 years to support housing stabilization and wealth creation in nearby neighborhoods. The building’s ground floor will include approximately 11,000 square feet of community space and 4,000 square feet of retail space. The residence hall also fulfills the university’s commitment, under its 2013 Institutional Master Plan, to add more than 1,000 new student beds on campus.

“This building reflects the values of this city, the university, and the community,” said Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun. “A building is not an end in itself—it is part of a larger commitment to partnership and shared growth.”

The New England Council commends Northeastern University for its continued investment in student housing and community partnerships, which strengthen both its campus and the surrounding Boston neighborhoods.
