Brown University to launch new School of International and Public Affairs
New England Council member, Brown University will launch its new School of International and Public Affairs in July 2025. The University aims to expand research to address the globe’s most pressing political, economic, and policy challenges.
The school will serve both undergraduate and graduate students and will be supported by faculty from a wide range of academic disciplines. Brown’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, founded at the end of the Cold War, will become part of the new school. Watson’s director, Edward Steinfeld, will step down and return to teaching, and the university’s Taubman Center director, Wendy J. Schiller, will serve as interim director starting July 1.
The Corporation of Brown University approved the establishment of the new school during a meeting earlier this month, initiating a yearlong strategic planning process for the function of Brown’s fifth school. The announcement follows years of planning, with 300 students currently enrolled in the university’s undergraduate concentration in international and public affairs.
