UNH’s AquaFort brings sustainable fishing to New Hampshire

New England Council member, University of New Hampshire advances its AquaFort seafood system in producing more local fish. On the New Hampshire Seacoast, researchers at the University of New Hampshire are transforming the local fishing industry through sustainable aquaculture.

The28 by 52-foot floating structure, raises steelhead trout in a system that naturally filters waste through kelp and mussels, creating a sustainable cycle that helps both the environment and fisherman. Researchers believe it could bring more stability to their business and allow for a much smaller footprint.

“The AquaFort is a community-based seafood system we developed here at UNH. We grow steelhead trout,” said David Fredriksson, Director of the Center for Sustainable Seafood Systems.

The New England Council applauds UNH’s AquaFort system as it represents the next chapter of New England’s historic fishing legacy.
