University of Vermont receives prestigious R1 research activity designation

New England Council member, University of Vermont (UVM) has been designated as an R1 research institution, a top-tier ranking by the Carnegie Classification, a program of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching administered by the American Council on Education.

A larger part of UVM’s research enterprise is related to the university’s Planetary Health Initiative, an effort throughout the institution to explore the inextricable linkage between human well-being and environmental health. This initiative focuses on finding solutions for greater global health and helped UVM attract over $260 million in extramural support for the 2024 fiscal year, which is more than double the university’s annual research funding over the last five years.

“Achieving R1 status is a transformative step for any university, signifying a leap into the highest echelon of research institutions…For UVM, this achievement not only demonstrates how much we want to accomplish but recognizes the innovation, discovery, and scholarship our investigators and students have achieved over the years,” said UVM’s Vice President for Research, Kirk Dombrowski.

The New England Council congratulates the University of Vermont for this prestigious classification.
