New England Council member UMass Memorial Health (UMMH) has announced Dr. Lynda Young as the new Chair of the system’s Board of Directors, making her the first woman to lead the board of largest health system in Central Massachusetts. In addition, Elvira Guardiola will serve as Vice Chair, making her the first Latina to serve in this role.

Young is a pediatrician and a professor of pediatrics at the UMass Chan Medical School, and was previously the head of the Division of Community Pediatrics at UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center. Guardiola is a practicing attorney for Worcester’s Parking Administration and Municipal Hearing Office and chairs the UMass Memorial Community Benefits Committee. Both will begin to lead the board in overseeing the direction and management of the UMass Memorial Health System.

“Dr. Lynda Young and Elvira Guardiola are invaluable additions to our Board’s leadership and will bring their well-respected patient-centric and community-oriented expertise to the table,” said UMMH president and CEO Dr. Eric Dickson.

The New England council congratulates UMass Memorial Health, Dr. Lynda Young, and Elvira Guardiola.
