UMass Dartmouth launches Nurse Camp for local students

New England Council member, UMass Dartmouth and Southcoast Health launched an educational program this summer for local high school students interested in nursing, called ‘Nurse Camp.’
The program was three days long and consisted of both New Bedford High School students and students in the UMass Dartmouth nursing program. With parts of the program hosted at UMass Dartmouth and some at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, participants were able to get a great range of experiences. Students participated in a training event in the hospital’s simulation lab, where they met with various providers and learned from them.
“In the professional setting, it allows us to improve on the teamwork dynamics of various disciplines, and learning in this environment can help build confidence, especially in new-to-practice nurses,” said Eleanor Almeida, Southcoast Health’s director of professional development, about the benefits of the simulation lab. UMass Dartmouth’s involvement in educational programs like this “is meant to address the workforce shortages by developing a talent pipeline into nursing,” Providence Business News reports.
The New England Council commends UMass Dartmouth for its investment and involvement in the betterment of health care education.
