Tufts University to launch $11.5m clean energy materials institute

New England Council member, Tufts University, recently announced the formation of a new ‘Tufts Epsilon Materials Institute’ being launched at the university through a $11.5 million sponsorship from Epsilon Group.
The collaboration between the manufacturing group and the university will focus on materials science and engineering, while seeking to develop new chemical compounds for use in batteries. Specifically, the researchers will work to find new options to reduce the reliance of battery manufacturing on lithium. Other focus areas will include electric vehicle batteries, critical materials recovery, nature-derived materials, and nature-inspired sustainable materials.
“Creating impactful solutions for today’s energy challenges requires a purposeful, collective vision and dedicated researchers to realize that vision. The institute will help us achieve those goals and chart a course for future growth and impact. Together, we will translate academic research into immediate, tangible, commercial applications that will power new directions in the energy industry,” said Tufts University President Sunil Kumar.
The New England Council congratulates Tufts on its new research institute, which will support innovation in clean energy and sustainability.
