Sununu knocks DeSantis, Trump in freewheeling speech before New England Council

By Adam Sexton, WMUR

MANCHESTER, N.H. — New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu took aim Wednesday at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, saying he’s nervous about the prospect of DeSantis as a leading voice in the Republican Party.

In a freewheeling speech to the New England Council, Sununu criticized DeSantis and others as “big-government Republicans.”

“I am so tired of this new wave of Republican thinking that big government is somehow the answer. I see Republicans out there trying to outdo Democrats at their own game of big government solutions,” Sununu said. “Disney isn’t turning itself around because Ron DeSantis said so. Disney’s turning itself around because its profits started to plummet.”

Riffing on the 2024 primary, Sununu indicated he’s not thrilled about the prospect of DeSantis or former President Donald Trump topping the GOP ticket.

“I think (Trump) did some very good things, but as a Republican, I got very frustrated. I think a lot of us did,” Sununu said. “Now, are we going to replace that with another Republican on the presidential stage that is just another big-government Republican? I get very nervous.”

As far as his own White House ambitions, the governor said he’ll make a decision this summer.

“I very well may run. We’ll see where it all goes,” Sununu said. “But I’ll tell you this. I’m not sitting this one out. I will get behind somebody. I will absolutely endorse somebody. I’ll put all my weight behind somebody. I believe in that.”

Sununu also hinted he could be heading back to the private sector to take a break from politics.

“It’s 24-7, it’s wicked hard and after a while, it’s like, OK, enough is enough,” Sununu said. “So, I’m not saying I’m not running again, but you know, I’ve got to get a real job. My wife is very excited that I just said that. I’ll be sending you all resumes shortly.”
