Skanska joint venture wins $1.05B contract to rebuild North Station bridge

New England Council member Skanska has been awarded a $1.05 billion contract through a joint venture of Skanska Civil Northeast and Skanska Koch to rebuild the Draw One bridge at North Station in Boston. The MBTA board of directors voted unanimously to award the contract, which covers the design and construction of a new lift bridge that will carry commuter rail and Amtrak’s Downeaster line over the Charles River.

The Depression-era drawbridge currently supports four tracks, but the rebuilt structure will accommodate six, along with two new platforms at North Station, bringing the total to 12. The project will also modernize the signal system, construct a new control tower, and position the line for future electrification. When complete, the bridge is expected to support approximately 11 million passengers annually across around 80,000 daily riders.

The MBTA is awaiting a notice to proceed, expected next month, after which Skanska will have 6.5 years to complete the project, with trains anticipated to begin using the new bridge in fall 2032. The use of a design-build approach shortened the projected timeline from eight years. Skanska has previously led major Massachusetts infrastructure work, including a $245 million contract to rebuild the Fore River Bridge connecting Quincy and Weymouth in 2012.

The New England Council congratulates Skanska on this significant contract award and commends the company’s continued commitment to strengthening transportation infrastructure across the region.
