Rhode Island Foundation awards $360k to 15 medical research projects

THE RHODE ISLAND FOUNDATION has awarded more than $360,000 in seed grants to 15 medical research projects.

New England Council member, the Rhode Island Foundation, has awarded $360,000 to 15 medical research projects. The nonprofit announced that the funds will help new researchers advance its projects to a stage where they can attract national funding. The projects range from exploring whether romantic relationships can decrease the risk of stroke to studying ways to help people better cope with ADHD and other diseases and conditions.

R.I. Foundation CEO David Cicilline highlighted his hope for research investment in Rhode Island and said in a statement, “Together with our visionary donors, we are providing the crucial source of early funding that enables local researchers to pursue promising medical advances.” Each individual grant ranged from $20,000 – $25,000, with the University of Rhode Island receiving 7 grants totaling $165,401 for various research projects like opioid agonist therapy in pregnant women and serotonin neuron modulation following spinal cord injury. Providence College also received 3 grants totaling $73,769 for research projects and the Rhode Island Hospital received 2 grants worth $50,000. Roger Williams University, Brown University, and the Ocean State Research Institute also received $25,000 each for their own respective research projects.

The New England Council applauds the Rhode Island Foundation for its contributions to improving the quality of healthcare in Rhode Island and around the world.
