Ørsted announces commercialization of new technology, Osonic
New England Council member, Ørsted, recently announced the commercialization of one of its new technologies. Ørsted and Luxcara, a German asset management company, have signed a preferred supplier agreement, marking the first steps in commercialization.
Ørsted’s technology is called Osonic. It is a state-of-the-art, low-noise alternative to conventional pile-driving used to secure offshore wind farms to the ocean floor. Pile driving is one aspect of offshore wind farm development that has received significant attention, particularly from marine researchers concerned about the effects of underwater noise on marine animals and environments. When Osonic installation methods were used at Ørsted’s Gode Wind 3 Offshore Wind Farm, it resulted in a 99% decrease in underwater noise levels.
“By reaching an agreement with Luxcara, we’re taking Osonic from concept to commercial offering, which demonstrates Ørsted’s strong track record of innovation as well as Osonic’s potential. We’re seeing increased interest from offshore wind developers across European key markets, and with this landmark agreement, we’re laying the groundwork for broader adoption,” said Patrick Harnett, Executive Vice President and Chief Construction Officer at Ørsted.
The New England Council commends Ørsted on this exciting technology and on taking the next step into commercialization and broader use.
