New MIT Lab Receives $28 Million Gift to Study Brain Disorders

NEC member Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently announced the establishment of the K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan Center for Molecular Therapeutics in Neuroscience. The lab was funded by Broadcom CEO and MIT alumnus Hock Tan and philanthropist Lisa Yang.

The new lab will focus on a number of brain-related research topics. The neuroscience center will explore removing or replacing genes linked to some brain disorders, which could shed light on potential therapies for diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The center will also research effective drug delivery systems for brain-related diseases.

“My goal in creating this center is to cement the Cambridge and Boston region as the global epicenter of next-generation therapeutics research. The novel ideas I have seen undertaken at MIT’s McGovern Institute and Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard leave no doubt in my mind that major therapeutic breakthroughs for mental illness, neurodegenerative disease, autism, and epilepsy are just around the corner,” Yang said in a statement.
