New AI tool at Elliot Health System an improvement for patients and providers

iLounge

To help reduce the number of hours physicians and other medical providers spend on tasks like reports and documentation outside of regular office hours, New England Council member, Elliot Health System, is working on a new artificial intelligence tool called DAX—Dragon Ambient eXperience—a product of Burlington, MA-based Nuance, a Microsoft company.

According to Nuance, DAX is an “AI-powered, voice-enabled solution” that automatically records both in-person and virtual patient encounters through “conversational, ambient, and generative AI.” This new tool aims to improve the quality of patient visits, clinical efficiency, and clinicians’ work-life balance.

Dr. Holly Mintz, a pediatrician and chief medical officer of ambulatory services for Elliot Health System—a part of Solution Health that offers health services at Elliot Hospital and many other sites across the Greater Manchester region— believes that DAX “will really benefit our teams and our people and our patients. Mintz, who has been in medicine for 28 years, adds that the need for documentation “has really made it difficult for providers, not only to enjoy their work but actually have some type of work-life balance.” Elliot wants to give more providers access to DAX. Mintz said it has 150 licenses and she hopes to see DAX roll out to other specialties.

The New England Council commends Elliot Health Care System for its strides in helping providers achieve a better work-life balance while also improving the quality of patient interactions.
