NEC Members Urge Congress to increase the NSF’s Budget to $11.9 Billion in FY24

For New England’s innovation economy to continue to grow and thrive, The New England Council supports advancements in federal policies that will support U.S. innovation and global competitiveness and help tackle some of the biggest challenges our region’s innovators currently face. Last year, the Council advocated in support of the CHIPS and Science Act, which among other measures, authorized significant increases in funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF).  Now that the CHIPS and Science Act has been passed and signed into law, the Council is urging Congress to build on the initial commitment in the CHIPS and Science Act by increasing the NSF’s FY 2024 budget appropriation to $11.9 billion.

In a letter sent on April 12, 2023, to each member of the New England Congressional delegation, the Council noted that by supporting curiosity-driven research, NSF is nurturing the next generation of scientists and solutions.  The Council commended the agency’s commitment to help build diverse new partnerships across industries – a foundation of the thriving New England innovation economy – to tackle new challenges and create new opportunities. The letter added, “Increasing the federal investment in NSF will improve our national health, prosperity, and security.”
