Brown University to provide full-tuition pre-college scholarships to Providence Public Schools
New England Council member, Brown University announced that it will be providing full-tuition scholarships to the pre-college program for all Providence public high school students.
The Brown University pre-college program has historically allowed high school students to take entry-level, non-credit college courses, with over 300 courses to choose from. These programs range from three to five weeks long and allow the students to reside in dorms. Originally, scholarships were strictly need-based, but by providing non-negotiable, full-tuition scholarships to students in the region, the school hopes to increase participation and remove barriers between the university and Providence families.
“Some students don’t have that financial information to share, or it’s a barrier for families who don’t make a lot of money or feel safe providing their records, said Jael Lopes, Director of Strategic Community Partnerships for the district of Providence public schools. By providing full scholarships, she said she expects an increase in participation.
The New England Council commends Brown University for its commitment to facilitating additional educational opportunities.
