President Joe Biden recently announced the nomination of Nicholas Burns, a professor at Harvard University, as U.S. Ambassador to China.  Burns was honored by the Council as a New Englander of the Year in 2016.

Burns currently serves as Roy and Barbara Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.  His previous experience as the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, U.S. Ambassador to NATO, and U.S. Ambassador to Greece made him President Biden’s top choice for this important diplomatic post.

The nomination was announced on August 20, 2021, and will require Senate confirmation. Given Burns’ extensive diplomatic experience, it is expected that his nomination will meet with minimal opposition in the Senate.

The NEC congratulates Nicolas Burns on this nomination and thanks him for his service to our country. Read more in The Boston Globe or the White House’s press release.
