In order to address a national shortage of rehabilitation counselors, NEC member Assumption University has been award a $1 million grant by the US Department of Education. The funds will go towards better preparing Assumption students to help those living with disabilities lead more independent lives.

Assumption’s rehabilitation counseling program provides an in-depth, multidisciplinary approach to working with people living with physical, mental, developmental, and emotional disabilities. The grant will provide tuition assistance and funding for faculty to attend conferences and expand the curriculum.

“At present, there is an acute shortage of qualified individuals to provide care and services for those experiencing some form of disability,” said Nicholas J. Cioe, Ph.D., CRC in a press release. Cioe, director of Assumption’s Rehabilitation Counseling program, will serve as the grant’s project director. “Through this federal grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education, Assumption may provide resources for aspiring rehabilitation counselors to pursue their goal of an advanced degree. More importantly, our graduates are well-prepared to empower those with physical, mental, developmental or emotional disabilities to pursue and achieve varying degrees of independence and dignity.”

The New England Council commends Assumption University on this award to expand and improve their rehabilitation counseling program. Read more from the Worcester Business Journal.
