Google Announces $7 Billion Expansion and 10,000 New Jobs in 2021

Tech powerhouse and NEC member Google recently announced its plan to spend $7 billion to increase expansion across the U.S. and generate at least 10,000 new job opportunities this year. The company also hopes to focus on diversity and inclusion within the workforce and spread the funds across 19 different states, including areas like Texas, Nevada, Mississippi, Colorado and Massachusetts.

The big move positions Google as a significant player in efforts geared towards economic recovery after the instability and turmoil brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tools like Google Play, Google Search, Youtube and other Google advertising boosted $426 billion in economic activity in 2020, with other products and services predicted to continue fueling new growth opportunities.  In Massachusetts, Google will expand its presence in Cambridge to a total of 1 million square feet in Kendall Square.

Ruth Porat, CFO of Alphabet, commented, “We’re continuing to ensure that we’re putting all the elements in place, so that we can steadily grow a workforce that reflects the world around us.”

“It’s a journey and one that is of the highest priority for us,” she also stated. “We’re continuing to work at it.”

The New England Council celebrates this new investment goal and praises Google’s steadfast commitment to economic growth in the tech sector. Read more on Google’s blog or Yahoo Finance News.
