University of Rhode Island begins work on $87.5M new biomedical lab
New England Council member, University of Rhode Island (URI), has been cleared to begin building a new state-of-the-art biomedical lab on its South Kingstown campus.
This lab comes as part of the $160.5 million higher education facilities bond measure approved by Rhode Island voters in November. The university will use $87.5 million worth of funds to build a four-story building on its science quad that is expected to include an incubator space as well as a wet lab, which will be the first wet lab in the state.
Wet lab space is designed to handle chemical, biological materials, and other substances in controlled conditions and will open up opportunities for crucial biomed research and training that hasn’t been possible before in R.I. and hopefully advance research being done across the state.
“In the next few years, I expect there to be a lot of biomedical startup ribbon-cutting in Rhode Island… [These] incubator labs will be used by every biomed company [in Rhode Island]. We can keep it all in-house in the Ocean State,” said Neil D. Steinberg, chairman of the R.I. Life Science Hub.
The New England Council congratulates the University of Rhode Island on this new laboratory for opening pathways for biomedical growth and advancement across the state.
