Rhode Island Foundation awards $260K to help locals stay housed this winter
New England Council member, The Rhode Island Foundation, has given out $260,000 in grants to help local Rhode Islanders stay housed this winter.
The funding comes at a critical time for Rhode Island, as homelessness in the state increased almost 35% last year, according to the annual survey conducted by the Rhode Island Coalition to End Homelessness. The grant money will go towards 13 different local nonprofits that regularly work with homeless individuals or those who are in danger of losing their homes. The cumulative donation is expected to help more than 600 people.
“This gives these organizations an immediate source of funds to help people pay for minor, unexpected, temporary or one-time costs like car repairs, utility bills, clothing for a job or a crucial prescription. For our neighbors living paycheck to paycheck, getting help with one unexpected expense could be the difference between losing or keeping a roof over their heads,” said David N. Cicilline, the Foundation’s president and CEO.
