Jackson Lab proposes $33m Bar Harbor expansion for rare disease research

New England Council member the Jackson Laboratory, a nonprofit biomedical research institution in Bar Harbor, Maine, has recently applied to build a 20,000-square-foot expansion to its Rare Disease and Translation Center.

The addition will consolidate and expand the lab’s Rare Disease Translational Center and provide more space for laboratories and offices. Earlier this year, Congress allocated $8 million to construct the new facility. This funding is part of the FY24 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill. The project’s total cost is expected to be $32.75 million, and the addition will consist of two stories with a mechanical penthouse. Each floor will have a footprint of approximately 9,200 square feet, with an additional 1,688-square-foot mechanical penthouse.

The construction schedule relies on permitting review and approval, with a goal to complete the project by August 2026.

The New England Council congratulates the Jackson Laboratory for this exciting new expansion.
