MassMutual gives Baystate Health land and funding to build community health center

THE BOSTON GLOBE/GLOBE FREELANCE

New England Council member, MassMutual Insurance Company, recently announced that it would be giving away approximately 10 acres of land from its Springfield campus to Baystate Health. The land will be used by Baystate Health to build a nearly $50 million community health center. In addition to the land, which is valued at $5 million, MassMutual will also be giving another $5 million over 5 years to support the project.

Construction is scheduled to begin next year and be finished by 2027. Baystate Health plans to use the health center to consolidate services from its four existing centers. With the construction of this new facility, Baystate Health plans to be able to serve 145,000 patients per year.

“Throughout our long histories in Springfield, both MassMutual and Baystate have had an enduring commitment to each other’s success as we’ve worked toward our own respective – yet similar – pursuits, helping people live better, more fulfilling lives,” said Roger Crandall, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MassMutual in a press release. “We are incredibly proud that a portion of our property will serve a more meaningful purpose and a greater good, expanding access to high-quality medical care to improve the health and well-being of our community for generations to come.”

The New England Council applauds MassMutual for this generous donation and continued work to increase healthcare access.
