New England Council Urges House to Pass CHIPS Bill

The New England Council is calling on the region’s House delegation to support the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, legislation that would make investments to bolster the domestic semiconductor manufacturing industry, as well as other investments in research and development.

In a letter sent today to New England’s 21 members of the House of Representatives, the Council stressed the urgent need to address supply chain constraints that have resulted in a shortage of semiconductor chips, noting the widespread economic impact of the shortage. The Council also expressed its support for provisions of the legislation that would provide additional funding for the National Science Foundation, Commerce Department and National Institutes of Standards and Technology to increase investments in research and development across an array of sectors.

The Council previously wrote to the region’s Senators, urging them to support critical funding for the semiconductor industry. The Senate passed the CHIPS and Science Act by a vote of 64-33 on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, with 10 of the region’s 12 Senators supporting the bill. The Council also previously supported a more comprehensive package that would make a variety of investments in U.S. innovation and competitiveness.
