UMaine awarded for aquaculture research

New England Council member, the University of Maine’s Aquaculture Research Institute received $2.25 million from the U.S. Department of Agricultural Research Service to conduct research on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for shellfish and finfish. The project aims to enhance production and reduce reliance on coastal ecosystems by developing domestic broodstock, sustainable alternative feeds, and innovations in waste processing.

The funds will create new full-time positions at UMaine for RAS research and improve infrastructure, research, and development capabilities at the Center for Cooperative Aquaculture. The research will improve Atlantic salmon reproductive inefficiencies, aiming for a sustainable and profitable domestic aquaculture industry.

“We’re committed to expanding our knowledge and expertise in RAS to culture fish and shellfish in a way that’s productive and profitable while ensuring the highest standards of animal well-being,” said Deborah Bouchard, the institute’s director.

The New England Council would like to congratulate the University of Maine for receiving this award.
