Tufts University Launches the Innovation Hub for Food and Materials
New England Council member Tufts University recently announced the launch of the Innovation Hub for Food and Materials, a new research and development facility in Medford. Supporting entrepreneurs, researchers, and companies, the Hub will help turn ideas for food technologies and materials into market-ready products.
The Hub’s work will include novel ingredients, alternative proteins, sustainable food production methods, and biomaterial development for applications in agriculture, textiles, and medicine. Users will be able to create prototypes, test their functionality and texture, and evaluate consumer response. Technologies will move from the laboratory toward larger-scale production, providing participants with infrastructure and resources that may otherwise be difficult or costly to access.
“The Innovation Hub for Food and Materials reflects Tufts’ long-standing commitment to advancing technology in food, health, and materials science,” said Bernard Arulanandam, vice provost for research at Tufts University. “Tufts’ capabilities in nutrition, biomedical sciences, and engineering create a collaborative environment where Hub participants have one resource to tap into a broad range of expertise.”
The development of this facility is supported by a $4.6 million investment from Tufts, funding from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and additional philanthropic support. The New England Council commends Tufts University for its contributions and for strengthening the region’s food, materials, biotechnology, and life sciences sectors.
