Greater Boston Food Bank appoints Carl Howell as new CEO
New England Council member The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) recently announced Carl Howell as its next president and CEO. Howell will start this new role on October 1 following the planned retirement of longtime President and CEO Catherine D’Amato. Since it’s start in 1981, the GBFB has addressed food insecurity across Massachusetts through community partnerships and food distribution networks.
Howell will bring more than two decades of nonprofit leadership expertise to the GBFB, with the past 16 years spent at the anti-poverty organization Community Teamwork in Lowell, MA; here he helped serve more than 65,000 individuals and families each year. Throughout his career, he has focused on addressing the causes and impacts of poverty through direct service and public policy. His appointment to the GBFB comes at a time when food insecurity remains a significant challenge in Massachusetts, with the organization’s recent survey data showing 40% of households in the state experience food insecurity.

Having experienced food insecurity himself, he explains how “we cannot afford to look away. I am eager to bring my energy and ideas to our mission while pushing for systemic solutions to ensure all community members have the nourishment they need to thrive.”
