DoorDash Lauches Restaurant Reservation Feature and Robot Delivery Technology

New England Council member DoorDash is advancing their delivery options by adding the ability to make restaurant reservations and expanding robot deliveries in U.S. markets. With growing customer demand, strengthening partnerships with merchants remains a top priority for the company.

The new “Going Out” tab feature on the DoorDash app will allow users to make restaurant reservations, aiming to bring new customers to participating restaurants. This method is testing in New York and Miami and will further expand to other cities. During testing in San Francisco, 80 percent of users who booked through the app visited restaurants they had never ordered from before.

DoorDash is also continuing to expand delivery capabilities beyond traditional urban centers. Their newest technology, “Dot,” is a robot that can transport up to 30 pounds and travel at speeds up to 20 mph. Dot represents the company’s next step toward autonomous delivery. While DoorDash acknowledges that introducing robots will bring challenges in maintenance and operations, the company is prepared to meet those obstacles head on.

“The shift to autonomy is happening right now, and DoorDash is uniquely positioned to do something like this,” said DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang. “We need to find ways to keep up with the demand. The complexity of the deliveries being made on our platform is increasing too.”

The New England Council commends DoorDash for its advancements in technology and commitment to supporting restaurant partners across the country. The Council congratulates DoorDash on its new initiatives and looks forward to seeing how these advancements benefit both businesses and consumers.
