International TradeThe New England Council supports a fair and balanced U.S. international trade policy that promotes New England’s economy abroad. The New England Council has historically supported free trade as well as presidential Trade Promotion Authority. The future growth of New England’s economy, as it always has, depends on the ability to have access to foreign markets to sell its products. In 2003, New England exported $34.7 billion in goods to the rest of the world with Canada, Mexico, Japan and Western Europe, by far, being the largest trading partners for the New England region. According to numbers compiled by Export.gov, computers and electronic products, chemical manufactures, and transportation equipment accounted for over 58% of the region’s international exports in 2003. In addition to fair and open markets, The New England Council is also committed to ensuring that the United States makes issues regarding labor, the environment, and intellectual property top priorities in any trade deal negotiated. |
