Marine EconomyIn many ways, New England’s past has been defined by its relationship to the sea. From the China Trade to a once robust and vibrant fishing industry to the economic benefits of thriving ports, our region can take justifiable pride in both our stewardship of and connection to the sea. And as we look to the future growth of the region’s economy, we do so mindful of the immeasurable role that the development and utilization of marine resources can play. The Project we are embarking on is designed to highlight and promote two general themes: current areas where we are successfully cultivating marine resources, such as fishing, aquaculture and tourism; and an exploration of next generation marine industries in the science and technology areas. We began this effort with a very well-attended conference at Roger Williams University, hosted by President Roy Nirschel, a member of the Council's Board of Directors. Participants included former White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta, now chairing the Pew Oceans Commission; Jim Luyten, president of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution; Rhode Island's United States Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse; and Massport's Director of Port Planning and Development Lowell Richards. Further efforts to build on this work are now being developed. |
